Solana researchers create protection for blockchain against quantum attacks

The developers of the Solana blockchain SOL $195.42 Solana -9.78% Market capitalization $94.52 billion VOL. 24 hours $0.95 billion have presented a solution to protect against potential threats from quantum computers. The technology, called Solana Winternitz Vault, is based on hash signatures and ensures the generation of new keys for each transaction. This greatly complicates the possibility of malicious attacks on public keys used in the network.

Winternitz Vault creates special vaults for transactions. During the transaction, the system generates a pair of Winternitz keys and calculates the root hash using the Keccak256 algorithm. Funds are temporarily stored in two accounts: the first is used to sign the transaction, and the second is used to return unused assets. Each new transaction creates a new vault, ensuring the privacy of the user’s main account.

According to the developers, the innovative solution is currently available as an optional tool and has not yet been implemented at the level of the entire Solana blockchain. Its main advantage is the protection of digital assets from possible attacks using high-performance quantum computers, although some experts believe that the threat of such attacks is somewhat exaggerated.

The introduction of Google' s Willow quantum chip in 2024 has raised concerns because quantum computers could theoretically compromise the security of the cryptography used to secure transactions on the Bitcoin network. Particularly vulnerable are the addresses where coins are stored as public keys, which accounts for about 37% of Bitcoin’s issuance.
