A decentralized social network that could replace Twitter has been revealed

2:46 pm, November 16, 2022

The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk led to controversial changes on the platform, which not all users appreciated. Some decided to look for an alternative, one of which is the decentralized open source social network Mastodon.

Mastodon is considered a decentralized platform because it is not owned by any individual or company. It is a non-profit organization with software that can be used to create social networks. They are run on different servers (there are over 3000) by administrators who can set their own rules.

When registering, users have to choose a server on their own: «It's like choosing your ISP, different groups of people choose different companies whose policies suit them better

Currently, Mastodon has over 1.8 million monthly active users, a figure that was 400,000 before Elon Musk acquired Twitter. Mastodon’s popularity is growing because not all users like the changes in Musk’s social network: Blue subscription fee with an account verification checkmark, dismissal of 75% of employees, refusal to launch a crypto wallet, introduction of paid videos, etc.

It is worth noting that the growth rate of new users on Twitter has accelerated by more than 20%. Since the end of the second quarter of 2022 (when the Musk vs. Twitter management litigation began), more than 15 million new users have registered on the platform.
