Tech market experts have stated that a fake HDMI adapter for iPhone has appeared that looks very similar to the original product from Apple. However, when connecting the device, the user is prompted to scan a QR code that directs to an advertising site. The suspicious resource asks the user to download an application that requires access to geodata, photos, videos, and sets tracking cookies. The application also informs the user that all their data is sent to China.

The adapter was discovered by John Bumstead, a whistleblower for 404 Media. The man said he bought the device from one of the recyclers of used electronics. Although the HDMI adapter is not a spyware device, unlike some other cables, it can still be dangerous for users.

When the adapter is connected to a monitor, a QR code, serial number, and the «LIVE TV» logo appear on the screen. After scanning the code, the user is taken to the website of EZ Cast, which claims to have more than 10 million users worldwide. However, as it turned out, the security of this company’s devices has not been proven.

When trying to use the EZ Cast app, the user is asked to grant many permissions, including access to personal information, geodata, photos, and even Bluetooth. At the same time, the app constantly displays ads and requires various permissions to perform even the simplest actions.

It’s worth noting that the emergence of such an adapter is especially relevant in the wake of the Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit against Amazon for clogging the site with ads and making it difficult to find the right products. Some Reddit users have already expressed their dissatisfaction with this adapter, claiming that they purchased it on Amazon.
