Tether cryptocurrency to be monitored by FBI and Secret Service

11:11 pm, December 17, 2023

Tether, a company known for its USDT stablecoin, has announced the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Secret Service in its platform. This was part of the company’s efforts to improve security and prevent the use of its cryptocurrency by «undesirable persons.»

Paolo Ardoino, the new CEO of Tether, shared this information in a letter to US lawmakers. He noted that the company recently froze Tether tokens in all wallets that are on the sanctions list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). According to him, Tether helped the US Department of Justice, the Secret Service, and the FBI freeze 326 wallets that controlled 435 million USDT.

Ardoino also said that the company «recently brought the US Secret Service on board and is in the process of bringing the FBI on board.» The letters were addressed to Senator Cynthia Lummis, who is known for her support of cryptocurrencies in the Senate, as well as to the chairmen and members of relevant committees.

These measures reflect the growing attention to security in the cryptocurrency industry, especially in light of the increasing number of cyberattacks and fraudulent schemes. The involvement of organizations such as the FBI and the Secret Service underscores the seriousness with which Tether takes the protection of its users and partners. At the same time, it raises questions about the project’s decentralized basis.
