The founder of cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash will be released
Alexey Pertsev, co-founder of the crypto mixer Tornado Cash, will be released today, February 7, 2025, after a Dutch court decided to suspend his pre-trial detention. His release will be subject to electronic monitoring, which will allow him to work on his appeal.
Earlier, a Dutch court found Pertsev guilty of facilitating the laundering of $ 2.2 billion through Tornado Cash, sentencing him to 64 months in prison and confiscating $ 2 million worth of property. Pertsev denies his guilt and has filed an appeal. The developer’s lawyers tried to get him released on bail but were denied.
Tornado Cash is a decentralized service that allows users to hide transactions on the Ethereum network by mixing coins. After the service was added to the US sanctions list, its creators were accused of facilitating money laundering. According to the US authorities, billions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency was laundered through Tornado Cash, including amounts attributed to the Lazarus hacker group from North Korea.
Against the backdrop of these events, another co-founder of Tornado Cash, Roman Storm, asked a US court to drop criminal charges against him. He refers to the decision of the US Court of Appeals, which questioned the legal validity of sanctions against the project.
