The hackers themselves reported that they had hacked a well-known cryptocurrency project

6:49 pm, November 18, 2023

The notorious ransomware group AlphV has taken an unprecedented step to put pressure on its victim, MeridianLink, by reporting it to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

AlphV, known for its aggressive tactics, announced the hacking of a well-known publicly traded digital lending company. Recently, the hackers posted a screenshot of a complaint to the SEC on the Darweb, which they allegedly filed to push the company to pay the money (the US has a law requiring companies to report hacks so that no one keeps this information secret).

MeridianLink confirmed the existence of a «cybersecurity incident» but did not provide specific details.

The bold move by AlphV hackers raises questions about the evolution of the tactics of ransomware groups, as hackers are now using the power of regulatory authorities to force victims to pay large sums of money.

In March of this year, the same hackers posted photos of cancer patients online because the clinic refused to pay the ransom.
