The most famous hacker group in the world has carried out a massive exploit of cryptocurrency projects

2:37 pm, September 13, 2023

Analysts at blockchain security company SlowMist and its partners have detected a series of hacker attacks targeting cryptocurrency companies. Experts assume that the Lazarus Group is involved — hackers from North Korea.

Experts said that the attackers created a whole scheme aimed at stealing digital assets. The cybercriminals impersonated real customers, successfully passed identity verification, and even made deposits.

Having earned a certain level of trust, the hackers launched trojans on devices running Windows or Mac operating systems. The malware entered the local network and remained undetected for a long time, and the attackers used it to steal cryptocurrencies.

SlowMist experts have identified the domain names and samples of the malware associated with the hack. It is currently unknown how much money the fraudsters stole and whether they managed to completely eliminate the consequences of the exploit.

It is worth noting that Lazarus Group is likely behind the hacking of the Atomic Wallet wallet and CoinsPaid platform. The damage from hacker attacks on these projects exceeded $ 100 million and $ 37 million, respectively.

As a reminder, in 2022, cybercriminals from North Korea managed to steal $ 700 million from the South Korean cryptocurrency market. Record-breaking thefts of virtual coins allowed North Korea to accelerate the development of its ballistic missile program. Thus, in 2022, at least seventy launches were carried out, including eight intercontinental ballistic missiles that posed a threat, in particular, to Japan.
