Trump promised to keep all bitcoins in the US

9:33 pm, March 8, 2025

The US government has 200 thousand bitcoins, US President Donald Trump said on Friday at a White House forum on cryptocurrencies.

«The federal government is already among the largest bitcoin holders. These funds will form the basis of the new federal reserve,» the White House chief said.

He noted that previous US administrations, mainly Joe Biden’s, had sold tens of thousands of bitcoins. Now they would be worth billions of dollars.

He confirmed that the United States will not sell bitcoins from now on: «I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do. And who the hell knows? But it’s been the right approach so far.» Donald Trump added that the U.S. Treasury and the U.S. Department of Commerce will explore additional ways to accumulate bitcoins for the reserve.

Earlier, Trump signed a decree on the formation of a strategic cryptocurrency reserve.
