Twitter founder plans to give away cryptocurrency for free

12:07 am, April 5, 2026

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (now X) and CEO of Block, announced the return of the Bitcoin faucet, a mechanism for distributing small amounts of BTC for free. The message appeared on April 3, 2026, and quickly attracted the attention of the crypto community.

According to an announcement from the Bitcoin at Block account, the faucet is scheduled to launch on April 6, 2026, via a new website, btc.day. The page already displays a countdown, an orange faucet symbol, and the slogans «The Faucet is Back» and «Buy, Secure, Spend.» The company has not yet disclosed details on the amount of payments, rules of participation, and technical implementation.

The concept of bitcoin faucets dates back to 2010, when developer Gavin Andresen created a website that gave out up to 5 BTC to each visitor for solving a CAPTCHA. At the time, bitcoin had virtually no market value, so the giveaway was a way to popularize the new technology. Today, those 5 BTC are worth more than $ 480,000. In total, the first crane distributed about 19,700 coins.

As the price of bitcoin rose, such initiatives gradually disappeared. Today’s faucets, if they exist, give out microscopic amounts and often require completion of tasks or participation in affiliate programs. Block’s initiative may become significantly larger — the company is holding 8,883 BTC, although neither Dorsey nor Block has specified whether some of these funds will be used for distribution.

Block already offers bitcoin purchases and storage through its Cash App. The new faucet could be an easy way to attract new users, particularly from developing countries and those who are still hesitant to take the plunge into cryptocurrencies. This idea echoes the original concept of bitcoin as an open, intermediary-free monetary system, which Dorsey has consistently advocated.

The crypto community is waiting for details on the amount of payouts, terms of participation, and whether the Lightning Network will be used for instant payments. For now, the btc. day website does not require users to take any action — it only displays a countdown to Bitcoin Day.
