Twitter may be blocked in Europe
On Wednesday, November 30, European Commissioner Thierry Brenton held a video conference with Elon Musk. During the conversation, the official threatened the billionaire with blocking Twitter if the platform does not comply with all current content moderation requirements. Brenton issued a number of ultimatums to Musk, including the abandonment of the practice of chaotic reinstatement of previously blocked users.
The European Commissioner emphasized that Twitter is currently engaged in an extremely aggressive fight against disinformation. Another requirement was Elon Musk’s consent to a comprehensive audit of the social network by next year. The billionaire was told that Twitter could violate the new EU Digital Assets Act, a regulatory document that sets a global standard for how large information technology companies should regulate online content.
Breton also warned that if Musk fails to comply with all these requirements, Twitter will be blocked in Europe, and the company will pay a fine of 6% of its annual profit.
As a reminder, recently Musk was outraged that Apple had «mostly stopped» advertising on Twitter due to concerns about the content circulating on the platform. The tech giant forced its partners to censor information about the coronavirus epidemic and remove anything related to vaccination promotion. The billionaire also threatened to publish «Twitter files» allegedly containing evidence against the platform’s previous CEOs who suppressed freedom of speech on the social network.
