A spaceport for Ukrainian launch vehicles is being built in Canada

5:26 pm, March 31, 2023

The construction of a launch site for Ukrainian Cyclone-4M launch vehicles has begun in Nova Scotia, Canada. This is reported by Shaw Tam media outlet with reference to the direct speech of Harvey Doan, CEO of the contractor Launch Services.

«The Phase I site is part of the Nova Scotia Spaceport, Canada’s first commercial launch facility,» Doan wrote on his LinkedIn.

Back in November last year, Nova Scotia hosted a presentation of the project for a space launch site for Ukraine’s Cyclone-4M. During the groundbreaking ceremony, the Canadian side announced that the future space command center would be named after Ukrainian Oleksandr Degtyarev, the general designer of Yuzhnoye SDO.

In the future, Yuzhnoye will be responsible for the development, testing, and operation of the launch vehicle, as well as ground facilities and systems. The Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant is to become a manufacturer and supplier of the Cyclone-4M launch vehicle for the Canadian company Maritime Launch.

Ukrainian developers believe that the province of Nova Scotia is ideally suited for space rocket launches, as it has thousands of kilometers of ocean coastline in the east. In addition to the safety factor, a spaceport in the region will give Ukrainians the opportunity to send payloads to low and medium Earth orbits.

Earlier, we told you about Promin Aerospace, a Ukrainian startup from Dnipro that is preparing for the first test of its own launch vehicle. In the near future, the company intends to test the technology for launching small satellites into Earth orbit. Initially, the team agreed to test the rocket at a spaceport in Scotland, but it does not rule out the possibility that the first tests will take place in Ukraine. As part of the pilot launch, the Ukrainian company’s rocket will rise to an altitude of 100 meters.
