Hacker who hacked accesses and sold them for cryptocurrency to be tried in Lviv

9:54 am, September 24, 2022

In Lviv, the prosecutor’s office submitted an indictment to the court, which reflected the circumstances of the illegal activities of a resident of Kherson region.

After the full-scale intrusion, the young IT specialist moved to Lviv region, where he decided to work as a hacker. In doing so, he used a rather archaic hacking method, the so-called «brute force» — a method of selecting a password by going through a lot of options. Nevertheless, such a trivial move allowed him to gain access to a number of user profiles. The prosecutor’s office does not specify what kind of resources these were and whether they related to the accesses of officials, but the speed of the detention and pre-trial investigation gives grounds for such an assumption.

The hacker sold the accesses on the darknet for cryptocurrency. During the investigation, searches were conducted and computer equipment was confiscated. Its analysis became the evidence in the case.

In the West, hackers act differently: they hack into public profiles and then promptly post information about fake cryptocurrency giveaways. Owners of cryptocurrency wallets such as Metamask visit phishing sites and lose their savings. The latest such attack was the hacking of the Omani embassy's website.
