Mexico introduces a bill legalizing bitcoin
Senator Indira Campis of the Mexican Federal Congress has introduced a bill that, if passed, would make bitcoin legal tender in the country and enshrine its equivalent to fiat money in Mexican law.
Campis argues that the adoption of bitcoin is necessary because about half of Mexicans do not have access to the country’s traditional financial system, which poses a huge problem for the country. «We need to take action to ensure that the use of technology can guarantee financial inclusion,» the senator believes. According to her, 56% of the Mexican population does not have an official savings account, and therefore has little or no impact on the development of the country’s financial system.
However, the Minister of Finance disagrees with her. Last month, Arturo Herrera said that the use of cryptocurrencies is not allowed by law and added that this ban is unlikely to change in the near future.
