Polygon names the advantages of NFT games over traditional ones

11:50 am, August 15, 2022

Polygon vice president Urvith Goel said that games using NFTs have a «natural advantage» over traditional games. He notes that the conventional business model that NFT games compete with may be weaker, as in traditional games, users usually buy artifacts for real money but cannot sell them. At the same time, in most GameFi games, users can buy items in the form of NFTs and sell them.

Goel characterized the traditional gaming model as «money at the beginning, but not at the end» and emphasized that gamers should be able to get back at least a part of the amount they invested in the game.

«We just want to give users the opportunity to own the content they buy. And if they decide to sell it, great. If they decide to keep it, that’s great too. But even if you get just a penny back, it’s better than nothing, right?» — discusses the Polygon vice president.

Goel said that he «sees clear signals» that traditional game publishers are preparing for a major push into GameFi, starting with South Korean gaming giant Nexon, which owns MapleStory. In June, the company announced that it would place a blockchain version of its flagship game, MapleStory N, on the blockchain.

Polygon has also entered into a partnership with South Korean company Neowiz to host new and existing games on the network. Goel noted that the entry of such large companies into the market creates a «domino effect» in the industry to «demonstrate that they are still innovative.»

Goel hinted that «the bosses of the big companies that are entering the blockchain market must be very confident in the technology,» otherwise they would not have adapted their top games for GameFi: «These developers don’t have to use blockchain to have a successful business. They are already generating hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars in revenue in the traditional web community,» — summarized the Polygon vice president.
