Sony PlayStation to launch NFT tokens

12:15 pm, November 16, 2022

Representatives of the gaming division of the tech giant Sony Computer Entertainment, which produces the PlayStation gaming console, announced the expansion of its activities. Sony PlayStation received a patent for the research, development, and launch of non-fungible tokens.

In the patent, Sony Interactive Entertainment described the system of operation and use of NFTs related to video games: «NFTs can be objects, characters, gameplay moments, such as video clips or images. Aspects of this technology include systems and methods for creating, modifying, tracking, authenticating, and transmitting unique video game-related tokens.»

Interestingly, back in July, PlayStation developers refused to integrate NFT in favor of their own ideas. Back then, the console launched the PlayStation Stars loyalty program to reward both new and experienced players. As Sony’s vice president of advertising Grace Chen explained, users will receive digital collectibles that «have nothing to do» with NFT.

At the time, some members of the gaming community were skeptical of the innovation, because in the new PlayStation Stars loyalty program, players do not fully own digital collectibles — they do not grant ownership rights as non-fungible tokens. Perhaps it was the dissatisfaction of the gaming community that led Sony to change its position.
