Record number of bitcoins confiscated in the US

9:25 pm, November 7, 2022

The US Department of Justice has seized $ 3.36 billion worth of bitcoins in connection with the Silk Road fraud. This was the largest cryptocurrency seizure in history.

For reference:

Silk Road was a darknet market where users bought and sold products prohibited by law, most often drugs. It was created and managed by Ross Ulbricht back in 2011. In this way, Ulbricht visualized his understanding of libertarian philosophy and the ideas of economist Ludwig von Mises. Ulbricht believed that governments use violence to take away people’s freedom, a sentiment he saw manifested in the United States' war on drugs. Ulbricht believed that the American war on drugs cost taxpayers billions of dollars and was a greater incitement to violence than the drugs themselves.

Interestingly, the Silk Road prohibited the sale of products or services «whose purpose was to harm or deceive.» This included child pornography, radioactive substances for making weapons, or stolen credit cards. In October 2013, Silk Road was shut down. At the time, the site had more than 100,000 users and was conducting thousands of transactions worth tens of millions of dollars every day. Ross Ulbricht was found guilty of a series of crimes and sentenced to life without parole.

Earlier, we told you that the Chinese government seized 194,000 BTC from PlusToken investors who were accused of the Ponzi scheme. This allowed the Chinese ruling elite to become one of the largest holders of the flagship cryptocurrency in the world.
