In the US, you can sue for injuries sustained in virtual reality

1:43 pm, September 13, 2022

Representatives of the Florida-based law firm Morgan and Morgan have announced that they will help anyone who has been physically injured in virtual reality to sue and receive compensation.

Morgan and Morgan described the new service in a promotional video in which a virtual lawyer talks about possible cases of injury in metaverse. Members of the cryptocurrency community suggested that by launching a new Web3-oriented service, Morgan and Morgan lawyers are trying to attract new clients to their company. After all, according to Morgan and Morgan representatives, they are the largest personal injury litigation firm in the United States.

Currently, there is no list of bodily injuries in virtual reality that can be brought to court, and it is not clear who to sue in this case. However, in case of real-life injuries caused by the use of a VR headset, users can sue both the headset manufacturer and the developers of the metaverse in which the user was immersed.

We wonder whether Morgan and Morgan will also handle lawsuits regarding theft and violence in virtual reality. Yesterday it became known that a South Korean resident was sentenced to 4 years in prison for creating and distributing sexual content with minors in virtual reality. The offender encouraged the underage victims to take photos and videos of their naked bodies and send them to him. According to law enforcement agencies, the South Korean met minors in metaverse, where he concealed his true identity and age. After receiving the desired media, he distributed it in virtual reality.
