US investigates Kraken cryptocurrency exchange, which worked with users from Iran despite sanctions

10:40 am, July 27, 2022

The U.S. Treasury Department is investigating the activities of the Kraken crypto exchange, all because of alleged sanctions violations. As it became known, Kraken served users from Iran, Cuba, and Syria, who, thanks to the exchange, were able to trade digital assets. According to the New York Times, Kraken worked with 1500 users from Iran, although the country has been under US sanctions since 1979.

At present, neither Kraken nor the US Treasury Department disclose details about the investigation. The Treasury Department does not confirm or comment on potential or ongoing investigations. We continue to use all of our authorities to enforce sanctions that protect U.S. national security," the Treasury Department said.

It is worth noting that Kraken is not the only exchange Binance-nezakonno-obslugovuvala-meshkancziv-iranu-vprodovzh-2-rokiv/">suspected of illegally serving users from sanctioned countries. Recently, Iranian residents announced that they used Binance to conduct cryptocurrency transactions despite the sanctions imposed on them, which prohibited Binance from serving them.

As a reminder, Kraken is known to Ukrainian users for its significant financial support — back in April, representatives of the exchange said that Kraken had allocated $ 10 million for Ukrainian clients who suffered during the war. Thus, from March 10 to July 1, Kraken customers who created an account in Ukraine received $ 1000 in bitcoins.
