Hundreds of cases against cryptocurrency owners are being investigated in the US
The IRS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) in the United States is working on hundreds of cases related to cryptocurrencies, and a large number of these cases will soon become public, said Jim Lee, head of the division.
According to him, most of the investigations are related to tax evasion. «Over the past three years, I have really seen a shift in the investigation of cases involving digital assets,» Lee said. According to him, most of the cases used to be related to money laundering, but now tax cases account for about half of all investigations.
Last year, the IRS created a new department to combine efforts to investigate digital assets, cybercrime, and digital forensics. At the time, Jim Lee said that his team was able to track any cryptocurrency transaction.
Lee’s words should not be taken solely as proud statements — in 2022, his team confiscated $ 7 billion. It was his department that was behind the arrest of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan.
