In Texas, cryptocurrency miners stopped their work due to extreme heat
The largest cryptocurrency miners in the state of Texas have announced a temporary suspension of cryptocurrency mining due to the extreme heat.
As it has become known, the ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) energy company has addressed 26 million of its customers, including crypto miners, urging them to save energy due to the abnormal heat this summer. Recently, the temperature in Dallas exceeded 100°F (about 37°C).
According to Lee Bratcher, a spokesman for the Texas Blockchain Association, commercial mining operations, which account for 1000 MW of electricity, have been halted. Among the miners that have stopped their work: Argo Blockchain PLC, Riot Blockchain, Core Scientific. It is currently unknown when exactly miners will be able to resume cryptocurrency mining and whether the pause in their work will affect the virtual asset market.
As a reminder, in June, residents of Corsicana (Navarro County, Texas) protested the construction of the world’s largest bitcoin mining facility by Riot Blockchain. The new facility will be 30% larger than the existing mining center in Rockdale and will have a maximum capacity of 1 gigawatt. One of the things that concerns the group of protesters the most is the amount of water the facility uses to cool its equipment at a time when the county often faces droughts.
