Ukraine adds Xiaomi to the list of international sponsors of war
The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) has added the Chinese company Xiaomi Corporation to the list of international sponsors of war. The reason for the decision was that the company not only continued its work in the territory of the terrorist state after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but also remains the leader in smartphone sales for the occupiers.
«From 2018 to the present day, Xiaomi has been ranked first in sales in online stores in Russia, and also has a large network of official authorized Mi Store retail stores throughout Russia. While the Russians were bombing peaceful Ukrainian cities, Xiaomi managed to increase supplies to Russia by 39% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the previous one,» the NACP said.
Thus, in 2022, Xiaomi doubled its market share and is now the leader in smartphone sales in the aggressor country. In July 2022, Xiaomi and its POCO sub-brand held 42% of the Russian smartphone market. It is expected that the company pays taxes to the treasury of the terrorist state. These funds, in particular, support the Russian army, which is killing Ukrainians today.
The Russian market is extremely important for the Chinese company, which is why Xiaomi has not even announced its plans to leave Russia, although it has not conducted marketing activities in Russia since the spring of 2022.
Moreover, Xiaomi is now actively recruiting staff for its Russian offices and has announced the official launch of flagship smartphone sales. «Xiaomi Corporation is sponsoring the military aggression of a terrorist state and must bear both reputational and legal consequences of its actions,» the NACP emphasized.
In total, the agency has already added 21 companies to the list of international war sponsors. All the companies on the list are included in the World-Check database, which keeps track of high-risk individuals and organizations and is used worldwide to identify and manage financial, regulatory and reputational risks.
