Russian media reported that Moscow and Washington were allegedly negotiating joint management of ZNPP without Ukraine’s participation, and that the United States was interested in using its electricity for crypto mining.
According to media reports, Vladimir Putin voiced this information during a meeting with business, adding that Ukrainian specialists would continue to work at the plant after receiving Russian passports. Russian troops seized Zaporizhzhia NPP in March 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously proposed creating a joint mission with the United States to manage the plant. The IAEA and other international organizations emphasize that any decisions without Ukraine’s participation are illegal.
Currently, ZNPP is not generating electricity for the Ukrainian grid, and all six reactors are in safe shutdown mode. The situation remains critical due to power outages. Against the backdrop of Russia’s massive attacks, the Ukrainian energy system is under intense pressure.
There is currently no official US position on possible negotiations on the plant without Ukraine’s participation.
