This was reported by journalist Colin Wu.
Railgun is an EVM privacy protocol that keeps the details of transfers such as token type, amount, sender, and recipient secret.
According to Arkham Intelligence’s dashboard, Buterin interacted with the protocol several times over the past six months. At first, he sent small amounts, but eventually increased the amount. The last transaction on April 15 was for 100 ETH.
Under Wu’s post on the X platform, community members suggested that the developer simply wants privacy given the high attention to his persona. «I'd use Railgun too if I blew up the whole world every time I did something with my money,» wrote a user under the name dtheo.
Representatives of the anonymizer also responded to the journalist’s post. They noted that the protocol is «a fully decentralized system that can be used by anyone.»
Vitalik Buterin himself commented on the journalist’s tweet, saying that«privacy is normal.»
It should be noted that over the past day, the native Railgun token (RAIL) has grown by 145% - from $ 0.58 to $ 1.34. Its capitalization reached $ 79 million.
Earlier, Colin Wu noted that a group of North Korean hackers, the Lazarus Group, is actively using the Railgun cryptocurrency mixer. In January 2023, FBI officials stated that North Korean cybercriminals used this platform to launder more than $ 60 million worth of Ethereum stolen in June 2022.
The Railgun protocol is seen as the main alternative to Tornado Cash after the service and its developers were sanctioned by the United States government.
