The US authorities are considering a mining ban, which is a direct threat to bitcoin

4:33 pm, September 10, 2022

The White House has expressed concern that mining may have a negative impact on the environment. President Joe Biden’s administration and regulators have begun discussing the introduction of measures to address the carbon footprint of cryptocurrency mining. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy did not propose specific rules, the report states that measures should be developed and implemented.

The document states that miners are encouraged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the participation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy, and other federal agencies.

Government agencies should provide technical assistance and initiate a process of cooperation with states, the crypto community, and other organizations to develop effective technologies based on environmental standards.

It is worth noting that Charles Hoskinson, the creator of the Cardano cryptocurrency (ADA), commented on this earlier. He noted that such recommendations are unlikely to be fully implemented, which means that the Senate may ban the PoW consensus as such. The United States is among the leaders in terms of bitcoin mining, so this will directly affect the flagship cryptocurrency.
