MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet owners have fallen victim to a hacker attack
The owners of the MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet have faced phishing emails due to the compromise of the Namecheap domain provider. BleepingComputer writes about this with reference to a fake letter received by the editorial office on behalf of MetaMask.
In the emails, fraudsters warn cryptocurrency wallet owners about closing their accounts allegedly due to failure to meet verification requirements. The user was required to complete the verification process through a fraudulent website (kyc.bip-portal[.]info), which looked like the original MetaMask website.
However, the fraudsters demanded to provide a private key or seed phrase instead of ordinary documents (such as a passport or driver’s license) to pass the verification process.
WARNING The transfer of such data will lead to the loss of cryptocurrency without the possibility of its return.
The fraudulent mailing has already been confirmed by MetaMask. On Twitter, representatives of the crypto wallet emphasized that they never collect user identification data and do not correspond with customers regarding access to their accounts.
⚠️MetaMask does not collect KYC info and will never email you about your account!
Do not enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on a website EVER.
If you got an email today from MetaMask or Namecheap or anyone else like this, ignore it & do not click its links!https://t.co/EP0HGZFOfo pic.twitter.com/4CDtne24OK— MetaMask ?? (@MetaMask) February 13, 2023
However, MetaMask still monitors its customers. As a reminder, the company recently announced that it would track user transactions to prevent phishing attacks or hacks. The developers have also added the option to display balance, token prices, and track incoming transactions. These features are optional and can be added or removed in the crypto wallet settings.
In January, MetaMask launched a cryptocurrency staking feature. Users can now block their assets in Ethereum (ETH) through Lido or Rocket Pool and even make money on it. And in the US, crypto wallets can be deposited using the PayPal payment system — this applies to tokens that belong to the Ethereum ecosystem.
