Wikipedia stops accepting cryptocurrencies due to environmental damage

Wikimedia, the NGO that develops the Wikipedia project, has announced that the decision to stop accepting cryptocurrency donations is final. At the same time, the foundation noted that it will remain flexible with regard to the future needs of donors, and therefore, in the distant future, Wikipedia’s return to cryptocurrencies is possible.

Prior to this decision, the largest encyclopedia accepted donations in bitcoin, bitcoin cash, and ethereum. The decision to ban was made after a vote of the main contributors to the project. 71.2% of the voters decided that the reputational damage from environmental damage was greater than the need for additional money.

It is worth noting that cryptocurrencies played a minor role in the project’s financial structure. In January, the foundation reported that it had received cryptocurrency donations worth about $ 130 000 in the last fiscal year, which is about 0.08% of its income.
