South Korean government’s YouTube channel broadcasts fake videos about cryptocurrency with Elon Musk — hackers are to blame

2:20 pm, September 4, 2022

Hackers managed to hack the South Korean government’s YouTube channel and rename it SpaceX Invest, all to publish a deepfake video in which Elon Musk allegedly discusses cryptocurrencies.

As it has become known, access to the South Korean government’s YouTube channel was restored 4 hours after the cyberattack, during which time users watched fake videos featuring billionaire and Dogecoin supporter Elon Musk. According to the Korean news agency Yonhap (YNA), the hackers managed to take over the channel by gaining access to the password.

The illegal use of Elon Musk’s image to promote fraudulent projects has become a common negative phenomenon for the cryptocurrency community. Thus, in late May, the Tesla CEO reacted to a deepfake video in which he allegedly promotes a fraudulent crypto project. In his tweet, the billionaire stated that he was not promoting any cryptocurrency project. The video, which was actively promoted in May on various platforms, was created to encourage investors to invest in a fraudulent platform that promised a 30% return on crypto deposits.
