Jewelry company paid hackers $ 7.5 million in bitcoins to keep customers anonymous
The hacker attack resulted in the British jewelry company Graff Diamonds being forced to pay about $ 7.5 million to avoid a scandal.
In case of refusal, a group of hackers threatened to publish the personal data of the company’s famous clients, including popular TV presenter Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham, Donald Trump, Sultan of Brunei and members of royal families.
After paying half of the amount, Graff sued the Travelers insurance company for refusing to cover the costs, although such cases were covered by insurance. The hack occurred in September 2021, when a group of hackers called Conti claimed responsibility for the identity theft.
In November, Graff’s management paid half of what Conti demanded ($ 15 million in BTC). Further behavior of the hackers and the future of the negotiations are unknown.
