Residents of poor countries proposed to turn into computer characters using cryptocurrency

6:35 pm, September 9, 2022

Cryptocurrency businessman and Wolves DAO member Michael Kossar proposed turning residents of poor countries into computer game characters, with the main goal of such a provocative idea being to entertain rich players.

Obviously, members of the cryptocurrency community did not support this idea, calling it modern slavery. Journalist Andy Chock wrote in his article: «People are playing crypto games with the idea of how wealthy Westerners can productively use Third World citizens… It’s a disgusting idea that is literally modern slavery.»

However, there is one positive side to this situation: by drawing the world’s attention to Michael Kossar’s idea, users can encourage government agencies to develop ethical rules for web3 games. However, Kossar is not the only one who proposed to «optimize slavery» — Filipino students play NFT on credit because they do not have the financial means to buy their own characters. Holders of leased non-fungible tokens receive large percentages of the profits of such characters.

It’s hard to believe, but in the twenty-first century, in addition to virtual slavery, there is real crypto-slavery in the web3 space. In early August, the Kazakh police uncovered an underground network of mining farms. In addition to illegal cryptocurrency mining, the criminals held an IT specialist in labor slavery. As it became known, a group of Kazakhstani criminals used blackmail and threats to force the IT specialist to maintain the mining facilities. The underground business brought the fraudsters a profit of $ 300,000 — $ 500,000.
