On the night of January 1, one of the main Bitcoin developers was hacked by hackers

Luke Dashir, one of the main developers of Bitcoin Core, lost 200 BTC as a result of a hack that took place on December 31. The crypto enthusiast claims that this amount is almost all of his savings in digital assets.

According to the victim, he suspects that the hacker somehow gained access to his PGP key. Some users link this event to an earlier hacker attack that took place on November 17. At that time, the famous developer shared information on his social media about the compromise of his server and urged everyone to be more careful.

Dashir stated that he had no idea how the criminals gained access to his wallet. According to him, he wouldn’t have even noticed the hack if he hadn’t received notifications of login attempts in emails from Coinbase and Kraken.

The incident attracted the attention of the community. It also attracted the attention of its well-known representatives. Among them was Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao. The entrepreneur expressed his condolences to the developer and promised to freeze the stolen funds if they suddenly appeared on Binance:

«I'm sorry you lost so much. I have notified our security team about it. If we see a fraudster, we will freeze it. If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know. We often encounter hackers and maintain relationships with law enforcement agencies around the world.»

At the same time, some of the crypto enthusiasts believe that the hacking did not actually take place. They attribute the disappearance of the funds to the fact that perhaps one of the users who are engaged in the selection of private keys to gain access to the lost BTC accidentally picked up the passphrase and logged into the developer’s wallet. But this is not the strangest of the versions, as some users directly accuse Dashir of lying. They believe that the developer simply staged the hack to avoid paying taxes.
