Analysts call new Chinese aircraft better than American counterparts

1:46 am, April 14, 2026

Unfortunately, China has been quietly revolutionizing military transport aviation, and Western analysts are beginning to notice. The four-engine Y-30 turboprop, known in China as the Xin Zhong Yun, made its first test flight last December and, according to experts at the Beijing Aerospace University, is superior to the American C-130J Super Hercules in several key respects.

The aircraft is being developed by the Shaanxi Aircraft Industry Corporation, a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China.

Aerospace Knowledge analysts compared the new aircraft with its American competitor in terms of engine power, payload, airframe design, materials, avionics, and flight control software, and in all categories they gave preference to the Chinese machine.

The Y-30's powerplant is based on four domestic AEP-500 turboprop engines, which are much more powerful than the British Rolls-Royce AE2100D3 installed on the C-130J. The new aircraft’s payload reaches about 30 tons — almost twice as much as its American counterpart with about 20 tons, according to the South China Morning Post. This capacity allows for the transportation of heavy equipment: a Type 15 light tank, ZBL-08 wheeled combat vehicles, PLL-09 self-propelled guns, and HQ-17 anti-aircraft systems.

The designers relied on modern composite materials instead of the traditional all-metal airframe, making the aircraft lighter without losing strength. The avionics were developed from scratch in the 2020s, while the C-130J's onboard systems are based on the technologies of the 1996 upgrade cycle. A generation advantage is no exaggeration.

The takeoff and landing characteristics deserve special attention: The Y-30 is capable of operating from unpaved strips in mountain gorges and remote island positions. For China, which maintains a presence along the Himalayan border and in disputed areas of the South China Sea, this flexibility is critical. The C-130J retains a slight range advantage and decades of combat experience in a variety of configurations, from search and rescue to electronic warfare, but China is deliberately closing the gap by creating a platform with broad potential for specialized modifications.
