ChatGPT now allows buying cryptocurrency

MoonPay has launched its own application in ChatGPT Apps, which allows users to buy cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC directly while chatting with the OpenAI chatbot. MoonPay has joined the list of crypto services already available in the ChatGPT store, including Kraken, OKX, CryptoAudit, and RealOpen.

The app’s principle of operation is quite simple: users ask ChatGPT about the cryptocurrency they are interested in and then ask the bot to buy a certain amount. The chatbot generates a link to place an order through MoonPay, where the buyer goes through standard identity verification (KYC) and links his wallet. If you already have an account with MoonPay, you don’t need to go through KYC again — just log in and confirm the purchase using the previously saved payment method.

«It's like having a broker sitting next to you — not giving financial advice, but explaining what you are buying. ChatGPT is perfect for this,» MoonPay engineer and product lead Kevin Arifin told Decrypt. In his opinion, people are increasingly conducting financial research on ChatGPT rather than through traditional search engines.

The launch of the app is part of MoonPay’s broader AI strategy. Earlier this month, the company acquired AI startup Dawn Labs and introduced Dawn CLI, a trading copilot that turns natural language queries into automated strategies for prediction markets. In addition, MoonPay recently launched MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard that allows AI agents to pay with stablecoins from crypto wallets in online stores.

Arifin emphasizes that the new application is not primarily focused on offline trading but on educating the mass user. At the same time, he recognizes a certain limitation: being exclusively in the ChatGPT ecosystem, the user depends on the interfaces that OpenAI decides to provide. That is why he considers alternative AI clients such as OpenClaw and Hermes, where agents can work locally and interact directly with the user’s device, promising.

«ChatGPT, Claude, and similar apps are the new main entrance to the Internet,» Arifin concludes. According to him, people no longer just search for information with a single query, but conduct in-depth, multi-stage research to really understand the topic. This is where MoonPay sees a new entry point for attracting users to the world of cryptocurrencies.
